Paramedic Zoe Chambers and the rest of rural Monongahela County’s EMS and fire personnel are used to wading into the middle of trouble to rescue the sick and the injured. But when someone with an ax to grind seeks retribution by staging accident scenes and gunning down the first responders, Zoe finds herself forced to not only treat her own brethren of the front lines, but also, in her role as deputy coroner, seek out whoever is killing her friends.
At the same time, Vance Township Police Chief Pete Adams races to track down a gun, a mysterious all-terrain vehicle, and the sniper before Zoe goes back on duty, placing herself—and Pete—firmly in the gunman’s crosshairs.

Zoe Chambers Visits Classy Cheapskate!!
Hi, everyone. My name’s Zoe Chambers, and I’m not used to blogging. You’ve been warned. Usually I’m too busy for this kind of thing. I’m a paramedic with our county ambulance service. I’m also a deputy coroner. And I manage the barn where I keep my horse. So not a lot of spare time around here. But I have to tell you. I love this blog!
While I may hold down three jobs, none of them pay all that well. Besides, my pickup truck is old and starting to spend as much time in the garage as on the road. Needless to say, I love a bargain! I was skimming through some of the stuff you have listed. A $10 Starbucks card for five? Pete would love that.
Pete Adams is our township police chief. He’s also my…friend. Maybe more than a friend. Okay, definitely more than a friend. But we’re—I’m trying to take it slow. I’ve messed up more relationships than I can count. This one’s special. I don’t want to make any mistakes I’ll regret later. Sorry. Got a little distracted there. As I was saying, Pete loves his coffee, especially Starbucks. I’ll let him know about that deal.
I was told I should write a little about myself. Like I said, I’m a paramedic, and I’m darned good at my job. I can start an IV or insert an airway in a moving ambulance, no problem. I could easily gross you out with some of the stuff I’ve seen and done, but I won’t get into that. The other job, though, the deputy coroner gig, isn’t quite what I envisioned. I guess I watched too much CSI on television and thought I’d be out in the field collecting DNA and solving murder cases. Instead, I mostly get called on to pronounce TOD (that’s Time of Death in case you wondered) on poor old folks who’ve passed away in their homes. If there’s an interesting case, my boss takes it for himself.
The other part of the deputy coroner job that wasn’t what I expected is autopsy. Like I said, I’ve seen a lot of gross stuff. That isn’t what bothers me. It’s the smell. As much as I try, I can’t handle it. My boss thinks watching me bolt from the morgue is funny. It’s not! Not one bit. So I’m currently reassessing my career choice. Do I keep torturing myself? Or do I give it up and stick with what I’m already good at?
In the meantime, I’d ask if you know of any good bargains on Vicks VapoRub, but to be honest, no matter what anyone tells you, it doesn’t help block the stench of autopsy. Trust me. Guess I’d better go. I have a “date” tonight with Pete. He’s teaching a citizen’s police academy class in town, and he invited me along. Hey, do we know how to have fun or what?
THANKS Zoe for stopping by and chatting with my fellow Cheapskates! I will definitely let you know if I find any deals on Vicks VapoRub, or anything stronger!

This is my first introduction to Annette Dareofy and the Zoe Chambers series and WOW, what an introduction! This book hits you right from the start and the action doesn’t let up until the very last page. To say it was a page-turner is an understatement! Even though this is the fourth book in the series you can read it as a stand-alone. There was enough backstory and character description to be able to embrace the series and not get lost. For those who have read the previous three, there is no feeling like you are rereading the previous books in the series, which I know I appreciate in any series! However, having said that, there were plenty of little nuggets sprinkled throughout the story that got me hooked and wanting to know everything that happened in the first three books (so you know where my next stop will be, that’s right, I will be one-clicking those three books as soon as I am done with this post!)
Like I said, this book had me right from the start! I read it quickly and didn’t want to put it down! The plot itself is very well written and well developed and had me right on the edge of my seat. I was a nervous wreck through most of the story and felt like I was living it right with the characters. This story was part cozy mystery and part thriller and the ending had a twist I didn’t see coming. I loved that I had no idea the whodunit of the book and I was kept guessing and re-guessing right up until the end. Characters, let’s just say the characters in this book are an awesome bunch! I love that Zoe is a smart cookie and didn’t feel like she had to solve this very dangerous mystery all by herself, somehow that made the story much more believable for me. Overall, With a Vengeance was a fast-paced read packed with action and enough gooey scenes between Zoe and Pete that I simply can’t wait for the next book in the series to be released!
